Authorities in Malawi's Neno District have imposed a two-week suspension on pig sales in areas under Sub-Traditional Authority (STA) Chikalema following a suspected outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). The precautionary measure was introduced after veterinary officers condemned a pig carcass at the district slaughterhouse that was suspected to have been infected with the virus.

‎The restriction is intended to prevent the possible spread of the disease while investigations are carried out. Farmers, traders and members of the public have been urged to cooperate with veterinary officials and to report any pigs showing unusual signs of illness or sudden death. The suspension may be extended if investigations indicate that further control measures are necessary.

‎Although the temporary ban is expected to affect the livelihoods of pork traders, local sellers have expressed their willingness to cooperate in the hope that investigations will be concluded quickly. Neno District has six major pork markets, including Chikonde (Boma Market), Ligowe, Chifunga, Neno Turnoff, Neno Mission and Zalewa Market, all of which could be affected by the restrictions.
